The Peacock That Fooled the New Caretaker

At Shantivan Nature Park in India, a young caretaker had only been on the job for a week when he experienced what he thought would be his first real crisis. As he walked through the enclosures under the sharp midday sun, he suddenly froze. There, in the middle of the ground, lay one of the park’s prized peacocks—flat, wings outstretched, not a single movement in sight.

His heart raced. He had been warned how valuable and symbolic these birds were, and the thought that one had died under his watch filled him with dread. For a moment, he imagined how he would explain this to his supervisor. His palms sweated, his stomach tightened, and he rushed forward, ready to call for help.

But just as he leaned closer, the “lifeless” bird gave a small shake, stretched lazily, and remained in place as though nothing was wrong. A few seconds later, it stood up calmly and walked off, perfectly fine.

The caretaker, still trembling, learned a valuable lesson that day: peacocks often lie motionless in the sun, almost theatrically, as part of their natural behavior. To a newcomer, however, the sight is alarming—so convincing that he truly believed disaster had struck.

Later, when he nervously told his senior colleagues what had happened, they laughed knowingly. For them, it was a familiar trick of the birds. For him, it was a day he would never forget—his first week on the job, nearly undone by a peacock with a flair for drama.
