The Violet-green Swallow (Tachycineta thalassina) is one of North America’s most dazzling aerialists, known for its iridescent green back, deep violet rump, and clean white face. From a distance, it may look plain — but catch it in sunlight, and it explodes with color.
This bird is built for the sky. With long, pointed wings and a forked tail, it spends most of its life in flight, skimming over forests, lakes, and meadows in search of flying insects. It’s especially common in open woodlands and mountainous regions of western North America, where it nests in natural tree cavities or abandoned woodpecker holes.
Unlike some other swallows, it often nests in small groups, with several pairs occupying the same stand of trees. Males perform swooping flight displays to attract mates, and both parents help raise the young.
Light-bodied and fast, it can twist and glide with effortless precision — feeding, flirting, and flashing its colors all in midair.
