Saddle-billed Stork, Africa’s tallest and most striking stork

The Saddle-billed Stork (Ephippiorhynchus senegalensis) is one of Africa’s largest wading birds, standing up to 1.5 meters tall with a wingspan exceeding 2.7 meters. Its name comes from the distinctive yellow “saddle” structure at the base of its long red-and-black bill — a feature unique among storks.

Unlike most of its relatives, this species is silent; it lacks a voice box (syrinx) and communicates mainly through bill-clattering and body postures. Despite this quiet demeanor, it is a skilled hunter, preying on fish, frogs, and even small reptiles, which it catches with lightning-fast strikes of its long bill.

One remarkable fact: Saddle-billed Storks are strongly monogamous and show remarkable cooperation between mates. Both parents build the nest high in trees, incubate the eggs, and feed the young equally — an uncommon level of shared parenting among large storks.

The species is considered a symbol of wetlands’ health. It requires unpolluted, fish-rich waters to survive, and its presence often indicates a thriving ecosystem. Though not globally endangered, it is declining in parts of its range due to habitat loss and wetland drainage
